How to use ScreenSaver as Wallpaper in Windows XP

Use ScreenSaver as Wallpaper in XPToday at Tech Reckoner I am gonna tell you how to use ScreenSaver as Wallpaper in Windows XP. Windows Vista has this feature inbuilt called Dreamscene which allows you to use ScreenSaver as Wallpaper. But how to get the same effect in Windows XP??

You can get the same effect in Windows XP also with the help of an OpenSource software ( btw I am a strong supporter of OpenSource softwares). The Software’s name is Vital Desktop. Download it from here (File size 187 KB) and install it (If you don’t know how to Install a software you are reading a wrong blog ;)) )

After Installing there will be an added menu in the Right Click context menu on desktop. Enable it from there.

Also from the same menu click configure to select the desired ScreenSaver. That’s it now you have your ScreenSaver as Wallpaper. Simple and Easy :) (If the configuration window doesn’t come up and it doesn’t seem to work then go to X:\Program Files\Vital Desktop and launch VDConfig.exe from there X:\ being your default windows installation directory which is C:\ mostly )

You can also download the Windows Vista ScreenSavers from here

These are the screenshots of the Windows Vista Screensavers. Just extract the ScreenSavers right click on them and install them or copy then to C:\Windows folder.

Where do i choose which screensaver to be used as the wallpaper?

  7. 7Johnny

I tried using Marine aquarium v2 and it does not work.

  8. The “inbuilt feature called Dreamscene” can also be used on Windows XP without any additional software (btw. i also like and support OpenSource).

With XPScene (freeware) you can generate a html-page with embedded Windows Media Player to play the DreamScene videos, the html-file can be loaded like any other Wallpaper (*.jpg or *.bmp).

Runs with 30-40% cpu usage on my P4 2,8 GHz; 512MB Ram; old graphics card WITHOUT video hardware acceleration (you can save 10-20% cpu usage with o newer graphics card using hardware acceleration, e.g. with nvidia PureVideo)

hmm, VitalDesktop (1.4.2) wont work on my XP. I can see it in the desktop menu, but when i click “start” nothing happens (tested with different screensavers).

For me Screen2Dream (also freeware) works fine !

  11. Hi P4xp, I used vital desktop long back and tested it with xp 2 work fine…. btw Screen2Dream Can’t find it…. Plz temme where to get it

@loco thanks for telling me about XpScene

    Please keep commenting and reading…

@P.M.: i have seen loco’s comment about “XPScene” (nice freeware btw.), on the xpscene site (www.dreamscene.org) i also found “Screen2Dream”.

i’ve tested VitalDesktop 1.4.2 on two PCs (XP SP2, DirectX 9.0c, newest nvidia drivers). After installing it, i can see the menu entries. “Enable VitalDesktop” is checked, but when i click on “start” nothing happens (tested with different SCRs). Maybe a DLL or something is missing.

i found out that it is a problem with the config menu. after clicking on the “configure” button in VitalDesktop, the normal Desktop configuration Dialog comes up (not VDconfig). When i start VDconfig manualy from the install dir, it works.

  15. hi Priyam, you can find Screen2Dream here: http://www.dreamscene.org/download.php

The Tool runs any screensaver as wallpaper. You can easily select your favorite Screensaver in a ListBox and watch on it in a Preview-Window. The Tool is simple to use, there are just two buttons for “start” (run scr as wallpaper) and “stop” (return to normal desktop mode). There is also a CheckBox to auto-start the Tool with Windows. However, the desktop icons are hidden while running, but you can select your desktop shurtcuts over a menu in the system tray.
